A man, who impersonated a doctor, allegedly raped a new mother in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a private hospital in Jhajjar district on Saturday. According to the CCTV footage provided to the police by the hospital authorities, the suspect also went to the ICU of another hospital on the same road, and allegedly targeted another woman there.
"Here again, he went to a woman and pretended to be a doctor. However, as soon as he started touching her, she raised an alarm. He escaped before anyone could act," a senior police officer told the Times of India.
The Haryana police have launched a raid in Bahadurgarh and neighbouring areas.
The first woman, whose husband is a policeman in Delhi, was admitted to the Brahm Shakti Sanjivami Hospital in Bahadurgarh, Haryana, where she had delivered a baby girl through C-section before the incident took place. The woman's relatives have since staged protests outside the private hospital for its lax security and negligence.
The hospital has launched an inquiry into the security lapse. "There are eight beds. Beds on either side of the alleged victim are occupied but no one heard any noise," an official from the hospital was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.
"The 22-year-old woman was assaulted by the man. The victim first thought a doctor was examining her and soon thereafter the accused walked out after committing the crime," Jhajjar SP Sumit Kumar told IBN Live.
The Haryana police said that the CCTV footage showed a man getting out of a car around 3.30 a.m. and going to the ICU directly. People in the ICU were asleep and nobody heard anything. The man was also seen leaving the premises, Bahadurgarh City Police Station SHO sub-inspector Randhir Singh told The Hindu.
The police has begun questioning the hospital authorities.
"We have spoken to the staff, the accused was an outsider. Video grab suggests he entered the ICU and targeted the woman and escaped after she got conscious. Rest investigations are in progress," Ajit Singh DSP Bahadurgarh told the Times of India.
