Shahid Kapoor's "Haider" opened well on day one, despite clashing with Hrithik Roshan-Katrina Kaif starrer big-budget flick "Bang Bang" at the box office.
The opening day collection of "Haider" was not as huge as Shahid's previous movies but keeping in mind the clash and the screen count, the first day total was very good.
"Haider", directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, is an adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Hamlet". The film was released in 1,100 screens in India, compared to the 4,300 screens of "Bang Bang".
The film, released on Gandhi Jayanti, minted ₹6.14 crore on day one, according to Bollywood Hungama.
Collecting ₹6.14 crore, "Haider" has now taken 17th position in the top openers list of 2014. "Singham Returns" is still at top position with ₹30 crore, while "Bang Bang" is now at second spot with ₹27.54 crore, followed by "Kick" with ₹26 crore.
The drama has received positive reviews while the word of mouth is also strong, which will help the business of the film during the extended holiday weekend.
"Haider" is targeted mostly at niche audience, and hence only a few circuits including Bangalore, Mysore, Mumbai and Pune performed well, while theatres in Rajasthan, east Punjab and West Bengal also did decent business on opening day.
Meanwhile, the film failed to beat Bhardwaj's previous directorial film "Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola" opening day record (₹7.02 crore). "Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola" was declared a dud but the film fared well on its first day.
"Haider" also failed to beat Shahid's previous film "R... Rajkumar" record in India. "Haider" first day collection beat "Phata Poster Nikla Hero" ₹6 crore total but failed to beat "R... Rajkumar" ₹10.2 crore total.
"Haider" is the third installment of Bhardwaj's Shakespearean trilogy after "Maqbool" ("Macbeth") and "Omkara" ("Othello"). Apart from Shahid, the film also features Shraddha Kapoor, Tabu, Kay Kay Menon and Narendra Jha in important roles.
