Two labourers were mowed down by a speeding car allegedly driven by a Gujarat Police constable in an inebriated condition in Surat district on Tuesday. The constable was arrested from the spot. Police have also recovered liquor bottles from the vehicle.
The deceased have been identified as Baijnath Yadav, 35, and 36-year-old Rudranath Yadav. They were returning home from a textile factory in Sachin industrial area managed by Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC).
The accused constable, Sahaj Shrimali, was posted with Ichhapur police station.
Sahaj was returning home with friends Raju Shah and Rahul Singh, residents of Kawas area in Surat, when the accident took place near Satvalla Bridge on Sachin-Palsana Road.
According to police, Sahaj was speeding and lost control over the wheel. The vehicle turned turtle after hitting a road divider.
"Four liquor bottles were seized from the spot. The accused police constable was off-duty. The three had gone to Daman where they got drunk and were returning to Surat with Shrimali at the wheel," a police officer was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.
Baijnath and Rudranath were rushed to New Civil Hospital, where they were declared brought dead. A case has been filed and the investigators have arrested Sahaj, Raju and Rahul. Sahaj confessed to have committed the offence in an inebriated condition.
