While the focus of "Grey's Anatomy" season 12 is Ellen Pompeo's Meredith's journey, viewers will also get to see how her sisters – Amelia and Maggie – are coping with the loss of Derek.
Maggie, Meredith and Amelia are all going to be living together, and their living arrangement is going to throw up a lot of hilarious moments. At the same time, there will also be a lot of tension between the three as all of them are strong personalities who might not easily back down from a fight.
"Right now it's very funny. Those three women are very different and don't have very much in common, which is fantastic," showrunner Shonda Rhimes told The Hollywood Reporter.
"Meredith needs support right now and she is related to them so it's not the same as when she was living with Izzie (Katherine Heigl) and George (T.R. Knight) and liked them. She doesn't necessarily need to like them to love them and be in a house with them. It's a fascinating dynamic — it's family."
As for romantic relationships in the ABC medical drama, viewers will see a development in Amelia and Owen's relationship. Although they currently want to remain just friends, Amelia will soon realize that Owen is unlike any other man in her life.
"He can equal her in tragedy and loss and yet he's persevering in the way that she is. There's a level of respect that she is surprised by. She definitely sees him as a person of substance," actress Caterina Scorsone told the media outlet.
However, it is not immediately known if Meredith will find love in the upcoming season of "Grey's Anatomy." Although rumours are rife that actor Martin Henderson will fill the void created by Patrick Dempsey's Derek's death, Rhimes said that she hasn't decided anything about Henderson's character.
"Meredith is on a journey. She's always been on a journey and I'm taking her on where the journey leads her and we'll see what that feels like," Rhimes said.
"Grey's Anatomy" season 12 premieres Thursday, 24 September at 8 p.m. on ABC.
