The midseason finale of "Grey's Anatomy" ended on a sad note that hinted the possibility of leads Derek and Meredith going their separate ways. While the future of their relationship is yet unclear, there's a reason to rejoice as some other fan-favourite characters are taking the next step in their respective relationships.
For instance, Jo and Alex might be gearing up to get hitched when the season returns. Their relationship has survived Meredith as the third wheel, and over the seasons fans have seen Alex grow into a supportive friend and boyfriend.
"They work well together and I think they're both really growing in their relationship," actress Camilla Luddington, who plays Jo in the series, told The Hollywood Reporter. "Even Jo being open and having this conversation where she's like, 'You know what? I am jealous and this sucks; I don't feel like I'm No. 1.' That's tough for her to have."
"You can see Alex really growing up in their relationship, too, and stepping forward and being a supportive boyfriend. I think they do have what it takes," she added.
Another couple who will be romantically involved is Owen and Amelia. Ever since Cristina's departure from the show Owen has been without a potential love interest, and the first half of season 11 highlighted Owen and Amelia bonding over their dark pasts.
"That could be interesting," Kevin McKidd, who plays Owen, told The Hollywood Reporter in October, responding to the possibility of a relationship between the two doctors. "I'd like to explore that for the character. I think [showrunner] Shonda is interested in that idea. The damage of those two characters could really be interesting to put together. It could create a lot of comedy."
The actor also noted that a relationship with Amelia could strain Owen's relationship with Derek, as their whole relationship dynamics would change.
"[That] relationship would take on a whole new dynamic and level, which could be really fun to play with — 'Whoa, you're dating my sister now?!' And Meredith and Owen have always had a slightly complicated relationship. I think there could be a lot of possibilities there."
"Grey's Anatomy" season 11 will return with its winter premiere on Thursday, 29 January at 8pm EST.
