Google has finally released the Android 5.1 Lollipop over the air (OTA) update for selected Nexus devices. Now available for download through selected carriers, the Android 5.1 Lollipop features mostly bug fixes of Android 5.0 Lollipop with a few new features.
The latest version of Android will support multiple SIM cards which will be quite useful for the Dual SIM smartphone owners; however, it won't help any Nexus user as all of them still feature single SIM slots. But once it gets rolled out to other carriers, the feature might be appreciated enough.
Google has also revamped the security feature with 5.1 Lollipop OS. According to Google's official blog, the smartphones running on Android 5.1 Lollipop will remain locked if your smartphone gets lost or stolen. The device will remain locked until you sign in on the device with your registered Google account.
"This feature will be available on most Android phones and tablets shipped with Android 5.1 in addition to Motorola Google Nexus 6 and HTC Google Nexus 9," notes Dave Burke, VP of Android Platform. That indicates this feature won't be available even with 2015's most demanding smartphones like Samsung Galaxy S6 or HTC One M9.
Another feature Google mentioned is the introduction of High Definition voice calling ability. The Android 5.1 Lollipop updated smartphone will get clear HD voice between compatible Android 5.1 devices Nexus 6 on T-Mobile or Verizon.
The latest update will also feature several improvisations like switching WiFi network or controlling Bluetooth devices directly from the drop down quick settings menu.
According to several rumours, the latest update will feature general improvements for better system stability, notification bug fixing and app crash bug fixing. The new version will also bring back the silent mode and fix up the sound glitches. Along with solving the WiFi issues like excess network consumption, the Android 5.1 Lollipop is supposed to improve the RAM management and improve battery consumption.
