India women are taking rapid strides in international sporting events, and one can add golfer Aditi Ashok's name in that list as well. The golfer was at her impressive best in the Indian Open, creating history by becoming the first Indian female to win a European tour title on Sunday.
The young golfer from Bengaluru showed some great consistency to win her maiden professional title at the DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurgaon on Sunday. Aditi shot even-par 72 in the last round of the competition. American Brittany Lincicome and Belen Mozo from Spain were tied for the second position.
She had a two-stroke overnight lead and showed some fine composure on the final day to deliver the goods. It was her strong character that helped her win the title in the final hole. Aditi was in serious need of a birdie, at least in the final hole, and the golfer's concentration was immaculate in the final moments of the game, securing the much-needed birdie. She finished with a total of three-under 213.
Other Indian golfers like Vani Kapoor, Amandeep Drall, Diksha Dagar and Gaurika Bishnoi could not grab attention like that of Aditi, who is gradually earning a name for herself in the sport. Aditi also grabbed eyeballs in Rio Olympics with her good performance. Though she did not win any medal, it gave her immense confidence.
This Indian Open victory is a huge landmark for Indian sports as women have not been strong in golf during the past. Such results can play an important role in helping young girls pick up a golf club and take the sport seriously.
