After revenge drama The Revenant and space adventure The Martian took the top film awards at the Golden Globes on 10 January, the films stars spoke backstage to reporters about their wins.
Steve Jobs, a controversial look at the late Apple co-founder that floundered at the box office despite warm reviews, took Golden Globes for Kate Winslet and Aaron Sorkin in the best supporting actress, drama and best screenplay categories. Winslet said it was a great year for women in film.
Women are doing such great work. I think that theres a lot of us out there still in the game. I mean, Ive been doing this for 23 years now. Cate Blanchetts being doing it for probably longer, actually. And look at Helen Mirren and Jane Fonda. I mean, these wonderful women that were so fortunate to stand alongside and to learn from still. You know, theres a real sense of girl power, I think, in this year, in terms of performance. And its just incredible to be a part of that, she said.
The big winner of the night was pioneer-era tale The Revenant, which won three awards including best motion picture, drama. Its star Leonardo DiCaprio won best actor in a drama and Alejandro Inarritu was named best director. DiCaprio, 41, who has yet to win an Oscar, received a standing ovation and said he shared his award with indigenous people around the world.
Inarritu said: Its very rewarding. We really submerged ourselves in this and Alejandro and our cinematographer Chivo shot this whole film in natural light in nine months in very rough conditions, and I think people, honestly, want to see that type of cinema.
Other winners included rising star Brie Larson, 26, who beat Cate Blanchett to win best actress in a drama for her role as a young woman held captive for years with a young son, played by nine-year-old Jacob Tremblay, in Room. Sylvester Stallone, 69, received a standing ovation as best supporting actor in a drama for reprising his iconic role as boxer Rocky Balboa in Creed.
The Golden Globes, handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are the first major film honours of the Hollywood awards season that culminates with the Oscars on 28 February. They can give much-needed momentum to films in a crowded field, and in recent years, top Globes have gone to movies that went on to win the Oscar for best picture.
