A 21-year-old youth in Goa committed suicide after an MMS showing him and his girlfriend in compromising positions surfaced widely across the entire locality, the Press Trust of India reported.
According to reports, the incident took place on Aug 5 when Arjun Mainkar from Sattari taluka in Panaji, hanged himself at his residence, after getting rape threats directed to his sister.
In a suicide note written in Marathi, Mainkar concluded that he was ending his life as he does not want his elder sister to face the repercussions for his actions.
Mainkar, who is a final year graduation student, was said to have filmed private moments with his girlfriend. The clip somehow went viral in his village, leading to harassment and threats from the girl's family.
Prior to committing suicide, Mainkar alleged in the note that though he had accepted his mistake and agreed to marry his girlfriend her three brothers were continuously threatening to hurt his elder sister to seek revenge.
"I admitted to my mistake and even signed on an affidavit during a village meeting that I will marry her (his girlfriend) after she attains the age of 18 years of age. I love her... But her three brothers and mother would often threaten me saying they'll hire goondas to rape my sister," he wrote according to IBNS.
He also mentioned that he placed an appeal to the state chief minister to take action against the the brothers.
"I don't want my elder sister to face problems because of my deeds... I have decided to commit suicide...I request the chief minister (Manohar Parrikar) to take stern action against the culprits," the note said.
A case has been lodged against the girl's family under section 306 of Indian Penal Court and is being investigated by Valpoi police.
