Ahraz Mulla, the chief of National Students' Union of India, has claimed that an image of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was replaced by RSS co-founder Vinayak Savarkar in Class 10 social science books. The textbook published in the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled state of Goa has left the student wing of Congress in disbelief.
According to reports, Nehru's photo had been removed from the same page of the book's new edition and replaced with a coloured photo of Savarkar.
The Class 10 textbook is titled "India and the Contemporary World II – Democratic Politics". The previous edition of the book contained Nehru's photo on page 68 along with Maulana Azad and Mahatma Gandhi at Sevagram ashram in Maharashtra. The picture was taken in 1935.
"It is very sad that the BJP has removed the photo of Pandit Nehru from the textbook and Savarkar's photo has been included in the books of the Goa Education Authority," Ahraz told IANS.
Ahraz alleged that it was BJP's plan to erase the contribution of Congress in the freedom struggle. The NSUI chief further stated that BJP will even remove and replace the photo of Mahatma Gandhi claiming that Congress has done nothing in last 60 years.
"They have to ensure they do not change history, which our ancestors have given us and the fight which the Congress has carried out for Independence," Ahraz added.
