Telugu movie Geetha Govindam has taken the Australia box office by the storm in the first weekend and made better collection than much-hyped Hindi movies like Gold and Satyameva Jayate.
Australia is one of the potential international markets for Indian movies. But it is not as big for Telugu films as compared to Hindi movies. Moreover, Geetha Govindam featured a young hero like Vijay and none had expected it do well in this country. Trade experts predicted that Gold and Satyameva Jayate would make better collections than Geetha Govindam at the Australia box office this weekend.
But Geetha Govindam opened to good response and collected A$ 56,257 at the Australia box office on its first day. Taran Adarsh tweeted, "A midweek release, yet Telugu film #GeethaGovindam takes international markets by storm. USA: Tue $ 395,522 [₹ 2.78 cr] An EXCELLENT START, without doubt. @comScore Australia: Wed A$ 56,257 [₹ 28.68 lakhs] A working day, yet the start is SUPER.@comScore"
The word of mouth helped the Vijay Devarakonda and Rashmika Mandanna-starrer remain strong at the ticket counters in the country on the following days. Geetha Govindam has collected A$202,266 at the Australia box office in its five-day-extended first weekend. Its collection came as big surprise for many in Tollywood.
On the other hand, Gold has collected approximately A$ 104,021 at the US box office in five-day extended first weekend. On the other hand, Satyameva Jayate has raked in A$ 88285 at the US box office in its opening weekend. Both these Bollywood movies have together grossed A$190308 in the country. Their collection together is not equal to the business of Geetha Govindam in the country.
Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, "Guess which Indian film has proven a tough opponent to #Gold and #SatyamevaJayate in Australia? Telugu film #GeethaGovindam, starring Vijay Deverakonda... The *combined* weekend biz of the two Hindi films [A$ 192,306] is less than that of #GeethaGovindam [A$ 202,266]. @comScore (sic)"
