Maria Sharapova is one of the most popular players in the WTA circuit and a huge crowd puller as well. But the crowd was not happy with the Russian ace, who was jeered off the court after her first round match against Kaia Kanepi.
The crowd at the main court were left disappointed as the defending champion did not give any post-match interview, which is basically a norm.
But to be fair with the player, she was not in the best of health and was suffering from cough and cold. There were times during the match, when Sharapova was found coughing as well.
The stadium MC announced Sharapova's "voice is broken", which led to a stream of boos on the court, as the former world number one started to pack her bags.
But Sharapova was not upset with fans as she understands that the fans are habituated to a post-match interview on the court, which did not materilaise with the former world number one due to her health.
"I totally understand that, you know, everyone usually does post-(match) interview and answers a few questions to the crowd," USA Today quoted Sharapova. "It's absolutely normal. I don't – I'm not making any excuses – but I've got to do what I have to do."
"I mean, unless I'm really in my coffin, I'm going to be out there.
"But it's just the way it is. I'm getting over it, and hopefully it will pass by soon."
Though she might have been booed off by the gathered crowd at Roland Garros, Sharapova did not upset her fans, as she had put an emphatic performance with her dominance in the court.
The Russian will meet Vitalia Diatchenko in the second round of the French Open.
