Jose Mourinho will be tearing his hair out over Chelseas miserable start to the season but it is simply a matter of time before the team get their mojo back, according to former Stamford Bridge great Frank Lampard.
The 37-year-old player, the highest scorer in Chelseas history with 211 goals, is now playing for New York City and was back in London on Tuesday (27 October) to receive an OBE (Order of the British Empire) from Prince William at Buckingham Palace.
Im sure hes pulling his hair out and wanting to turn the corner, Lampard said of his former boss Mourinho. I know the quality in the dressing room, I know the squad, I know people like John Terry and the desire to keep Chelsea up where they always are. And as I say that will turn around very quickly and then Chelsea can move on and be where we expect them to be.
Im not right behind the scenes anymore, so Im just talking looking from the outside but every team has difficult periods. Chelsea won the league as the best team last year and theyve had a difficult start. We dont expect that as Chelsea have set such high standards over the last 10 or 15 years, but I think theyll come back. Maybe players are out of form a little bit at the same time but youre talking about top quality players, top quality manager and a top quality club, so for me its a matter of time before they turn it around.
Whether they can go and win the league again is very difficult, but Im sure theyll turn themselves around and get themselves in a position where you expect to see Chelsea.
Champions Chelsea are sixth from bottom after losing five of their 10 Premier League matches this season and Mourinho has come under increasing fire for his repeated run-ins with match officials and the FA. Chelsea also crashed out of the Capital One Cup against Stoke on Tuesday (27 October) night.
Lampard, who won three Premier League titles and the 2012 Champions League with Chelsea, said it was a very proud day to be awarded the OBE.
It was incredible. For me, as a personal achievement goes, it ranks right up there with my achievements on the pitch and what I won with Chelsea in particular and playing for my country, Lampard said. But to receive an award like this amongst some very special people here − the military, people who are doing a lot of good work in charity and what have you, it was very humbling for me to be among them.
