Former Channel V and MTV VJ Sophiya Haque reportedly passed away at a hospital in London on Thursday. The sudden death of the actress, singer and host has shocked people across the country.
Haque was suffering from pneumonia and was admitted to a hospital in London for treatment, Firstpost reported quoting sources as saying. Haque had also been suffering from cancer.
The British-Asian actress shot to fame in 1990s as VJ/host on pop-music channels in India. She also played the lead character in a comedy film "Snip" which was a disaster at box offices.
She also performed a dance number in 1999 film "Khoobsurat".
Celebrities took to social networking site Twitter to express grief over Haques' demise.
"Tragic news about Sophiya Haque. One of the most gorgeous women to have walked this planet... Shine on where-ever it is you now are luv...(sic)," Pooja Bhatt tweeted.
"Saddened by the passing of Sophiya Haque, friend & talented actress, who I acted within "Far Pavilions", London West End," said Kabir Bedi.
"I can't believe Sophiya Haque is gone!! She was a dear friend, even jumped on stage with Pentagram a few times! This is so wrong!! RIP," tweeted Vishal Dadlani.
"Just heard sad news of the passing away of the live wire ex vj of channel v, sophia haque(sic)," director Ken Ghosh wrote.
"V expresses grief and sorrow over the passing away of our former VJ Sophiya Haque," tweeted Channel V.
"Sophia Haque was my guest on the Bournvita Quiz Contest in the mid 1990s... Vivacious,sexy,articulate. Gone too soon," wrote Derek O' Brien.
"RIP Sophiya Haque. She passed away in hospital in London, battling an illness," Nikhil Chinappa tweeted.
