Former MP and Uttar Pradesh politician DP Yadav was awarded life imprisonment by a special CBI court on Tuesday in connection with the murder of Mahendra Singh Bhati.
Bhati was shot dead at the Dadri railway crossing in December 1992. He was an MLA from Ghaziabad's Dadri area, reports Zee News.
Praneet Bhati, Karan Yadav and DP Yadav had been convicted under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 307 (attempt to murder) and sections 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
Three of the seven people chargesheeted in the case died during the trial.
On the direction of the Supreme Court the case was transferred to CBI Dehradun in 2000 after doubts were expressed about a fair trial in Uttar Pradesh where Yadav had plenty of influence.
The court had issued an arrest warrant against Yadav when he did not appear in the court on 28 February – the day when the four were held guilty - on medical grounds. He subsequently surrendered in the court of special CBI judge Amit Kumar Sirohi.
