Indian Super League side FC Pune City, co-owned by Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan, have roped in a big name ahead of ISL 2016 to add more mileage to their team. Eidur Gudjohnsen, a Chelsea veteran and a former Barcelona star, has been announced as the marquee player of the team.
Gudjhonsen, 37, former captain of the Iceland national football team, plied his trade last at the Euro 2016 in France. He brings in oodles of experience to the Indian football team and it will be sheer delight to see him weave magic in Indian football.
The two-time Premier League winner with Chelsea and a one-time La Liga winner with Barcelona has scored a total of 26 goals from 88 appearances for his national team.
Gudjohnsen stated that he wants to showcase his skills in India in the best way possible. "There were other clubs interested in me but when FC Pune City showed their interest, intent and plans, I knew this was it," the Iceland veteran stated. "I have the confidence of the coach and will ensure that they find it difficult to leave me out. Everyone needs to be motivated to succeed, and I have the same aim here. I love the sport. I still love going to training every day."
Former Atletico de Kolkata Antonio Habas, who will manage FC Pune City in ISL 2016, exclaimed immense joy on snapping up the experienced customer. "Eidur has experience of playing at highest levels and a professional motivation to succeed. I've admired him from afar for many years and am very excited at the prospect of us working together for the benefit of FC Pune City," the Spanish coach said.
FC Pune City missed out on a top four position in both the previous ISL seasons. However, with the determination that they are announcing top signings this time around, it won't be too surprising to see Hrithik's side making it comfortably to the top four in ISL 2016.
"His [Gudjohnsen] signing will further strengthen our squad and I extend him a warm welcome into the FCPC family," said 'Mohenjo Daro' actor Hrithik.
