External Affairs Minister SM Krishna has reportedly resigned on Friday ahead of the Union Cabinet reshuffle on Sunday.
Sources reportedly told NDTV that SM Krishna resigned from the Ministry of External Affairs but didn't cite reasons.
Reports suggested that the foreign minister could be dropped from the Union cabinet, which was scheduled for a reshuffle after much delay.
SM Krishna was expected to attend the 9th summit of the Asia-Europe Meeting in Laos next month.
It is reported that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi are almost ready with the cabinet reorganization. Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal, who is presently saddled with controversies, Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahai, Minister of Steel Beni Prasad Verma and Ambika Soni are also likely to be dropped besides SM Krishna.
Speculations are doing the rounds that Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi could be inducted into the cabinet. It is also reported that young guns in the Congress party like Sachin Pilot, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Jitin Prasada could be promoted to the cabinet level, or at least be made minister of state by stripping portfolios from ministers like Kapil Sibal, Salman Khurshid, and Veerappa Moily.
There are many vacancies left to be filled after Trinamool Congress left UPA and Vilasrao Deshmukh passed away. A Raja and Dayanidhi Maran were dropped earlier in connection with the 2G scam.
