Ford India is on a launching spree and has four new models to offer the Indian auto lovers, with the first being the recently-launched Figo Aspire sedan that has reportedly bumped up the sales of the American manufacturer.
Ford India is trying to revamp its portfolio and the next vehicle that it is expected to launch is the Figo hatchback. An Economic Times report states that Figo is likely to hit the market by the end of September or the beginning of October, followed by the new Endeavour premium SUV. And, the company will launch the Mustang at Auto Expo 2016.
At present, the EcoSport is Ford India's bread and butter model. The Figo Aspire has shown positive signs with 4,000–5,000 bookings since its entry into the market. The previous version of the Figo hatchback has been stopped now to make way for the new one. It was a success when it was launched in 2010, but with the entry of other models, the sales of the hatchback came down.
Despite being a strong contender in the segment, the Fiesta failed to fetch volume sales due to its high pricing. It was EcoSport that kept the sales of Ford India from plunging into an all-time low in 2014. But, the sales of EcoSport also slowed in the last fiscal year, driving down the overall numbers.
Ford India's sales fell more than 30% to 18,546 units in the first four months of the current fiscal year (April to July), when the Indian market grew 7%. Ford's April-July market share of 2.11% was its lowest in five years. The new launches are now responsible for turning around the sales for the American manufacturer.
Figo hatchback
The new Figo hatchback is based on the Figo Aspire sedan. It is already on sale in Brazil under the name of Ka. The hatchback is expected to feature a honeycomb grill different from the sedan.
Under the hood, Figo hatchback is expected to employ the same set of engines as the sedan. The 1.2-litre petrol motor and 1.5-litre TDCi diesel engine will be mated to five-speed manual transmission. The top-end variant is likely to get automatic transmission.
The cabin of Figo hatchback is likely to include dual-tone interior with Ford's SYNC multimedia system, automatic climate control, electronic folding mirrors and safety features like dual front airbags. The prices are expected to be between Rs 4.5 lakh to 7 lakh.
New Endeavour SUV
The third generation Endeavour is based on the Everest concept showcased in Sydney, Australia, in 2013. The SUV has been developed on a new ladder-on-frame chassis and will also feature the new independent coil-spring at the rear wheels. There is a significant change in design as compared to the previous generations and looks upmarket with more athletic stance. The interiors will feature SYNC multimedia system.
The SUV is expected to be powered by a 3.2-litre diesel engine churning out 197bhp mated to 6-speed automatic transmission. The SUV is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 22 to 25 lakh.
Ford Mustang
The iconic sports car will make its way to India as the manufacturer introduced the right-hand drive version in its latest sixth generation. The muscle car comes with the independent rear suspension for the first time. Ford India will launch the Mustang in three engine options: the lower powered 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine developing 305bhp, the 3.7 V6 developing 300bhp, and the popular 5.0-litre V8 engine that generates 420bhp. All the three engines will be available with a choice of 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearbox. The pricing is expected in and around Rs 50 lakh.
