India celebrates its glorious 72 years of Independence on August 15, 2018. As the whole country celebrates freedom, IB Times India present you the list of five patriotic Malayalam movies which you can watch on this Independence Day.
Kaalapani
'Kaalapani', directed by Priyadarshan is undoubtedly a real gem of a film. The film which hit the screens on April 06, 1996 portrayed the story of Govardhan, a doctor who dedicates his entire life to the nation. Set in British India, the film was made with a lavish budget, and became a milestone movie in the career of director Priyadarshan.
Mohanlal played the role of Govardhan in the film. The supporting star cast includes Tabu, Vineeth, Prabhu Ganesan, Sreenivasan and Amrish Puri.
Upon release, the film received rave reviews and ran for hundred days in most of the release centres. However, industry experts did not consider 'Kaalapani' as a super hit due to its mammoth budget.
Kashmeeram
'Kashmeeram' was released in 1994, and it featured Action King Suresh Gopi in the lead role. The film portrayed Suresh Gopi in the role of a black-cat commando who is in charge of giving security to a judge. Exclusively shot in New Delhi, the film has many scenes where Suresh Gopi delivers touching dialogues about patriotism and nationalism.
In the climax scenes, Suresh Gopi was seen taking on terrorists, and these sequences will surely increase the adrenaline rush in the minds of the audiences.
Rajiv Anchal directed 'Kashmeeram', and it was produced by Menaka. The film is loaded with an ensemble star cast includes Ratheesh, Sharada, Lalu Alex, Madhupal and Priya Raman.
Keerthichakra
'Keerthichakra' marked the directorial debut of Major Ravi, a dashing soldier who served the Indian army for long years. Starring Mohanlal in the lead role, 'Keerthichakra' broke many collection records, and emerged as a blockbuster at the box-office.
Mohanlal portrayed the role of Major Mahadevan in this movie. The film also had Tamil Superstar Jeeva, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy and Shammi Thilakan in other prominent roles.
Shot exclusively in Kashmir, 'Keerthichakra' showcased the hardships faced by Indian soldiers. Unlike other Indian military movies which often turn to be too melodramatic, 'Keerthichakra' adopted a very realistic way of story-telling, and as a result, it enjoys a cult status in the minds of moviegoers.
Picket 43
'Picket 43', another Major Ravi directorial which featured Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead role showcased a touching story of an emotional relationship between an Indian and a Pakistani soldier. Through this film, Major Ravi broke all traditional cliches surrounding the making of war movies, and in 'Picket 43', he adopted a more emotional approach capable of touching the heart of the audiences.
The on-screen chemistry between Prithviraj and Javed Jaffrey is the main highlight of this movie. Both the actors have performed extremely well in this movie, and their characters will surely haunt the viewers even after the runtime is complete.
Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja
Hariharan's classic movie 'Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja' is perhaps one of the best patriotic movies ever released in Malayalam. Penned by legendary writer M T Vasudevan Nair, the film showcased megastar Mammootty playing the role of Pazhassi Raja, a Kerala king who waged war against the Britishers.
The film emerged as a huge blockbuster at the box-office and collected more than 29 crores in 2009.
