Luis Suarez inspired Uruguay to a 2-1 victory against England, helping them keep their hopes of qualifying to the last sixteen of the 2014 World Cup alive
The 27-year-old striker, who made an immediate impact after returning from injury, opened the score in the latter stages of the first half. Wayne Rooney grabbed the equaliser in the 75th minute but Suarez secured three points for Uruguay by netting his second ten minutes later.
Suarez threatened early in the 5th minute as his cross, which took a deflection off Gary Cahill's head, was almost spilled into his own net by Joe Hart. The Liverpool striker's goal-bound corner was then nervously palmed by Hart.
Moments later, at the other end, Rooney fired an excellent swerving free-kick that narrowly missed the top left corner of the net.
Uruguay were soon back in the attack after Phil Jagielka's poor clearance found Cristian Rodriguez in a very dangerous position. However, the midfielder failed to trouble Hart as his effort went miles wide of the target.
At the half hour mark, England nearly broke the deadlock through Rooney. The striker latched on to Steven Gerrard's free-kick with a powerful header but his effort thundered against the crossbar.
Finally with seven minutes remaining in the first half, Suarez put his side in the lead. England were caught on the break after Gerrard lost the ball on the halfway line. A fast move from Uruguay allowed Cavani to whip a cross over Cahill's head towards Suarez, who easily found the nets.
England did manage to level the scores in the 75th minute through Rooney, who scored his first goal in the World Cup after getting an excellent assist from Glen Johnson.
Buoyed by the equaliser, the Three Lions threatened to take the lead through Daniel Sturridge. The striker, after dribbling past a couple of defenders, fired a shot but an alert Muslera manage to keep the ball out.
Finally Suarez sealed England's fate by getting his second in the 85th minute. A long ball from the midfield was headed by Gerrard towards his own net and the Uruguay striker latched on to the ball before firing his side in the lead.
