Argentina started off their 2014 World Cup campaign with a narrow 2-1 win over newcomers Bosnia-Herzegovina at the Maracana Stadium.
The La Albiceleste went ahead in the second minute after Messi's free-kick was turned into his own net by defender Sead Kolasinac.
Messi doubled Argentina's lead in the 65th minute before Vedad Ibišević scored a consolation for Bosnia in the 84th minute.
Despite falling behind in the second minute of the game, Bosnia refused to give up hope and they nearly found the equaliser through Izet Hajrovic. The 22-year-old winger managed to control a lofted pass near the box, but before he could take a shot, Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero dashed forward and cleared his lines.
Argentina, who were looking to increase the tempo of the game, nearly doubled their lead when Javier Mascherano unleashed a vicious long range effort. However, Bosnia keeper Asmir Begovic managed to punch his effort clear.
At the other end, Senad Lulic forced a good save from Romero with a header at the half hour mark.
In the early minutes of the second half, Messi created an excellent chance for his fellow striker Sergio Aguero but the Manchester City man's meek effort was easily saved by Begovic.
Finally Argentina doubled their lead through Messi. The Barcelona, after collecting the ball from the right flank, dribbled his way past two Bosnian defenders before unleashing a vicious 20-yard effort that went in after hitting the side post.
Although the La Albiceleste looked very relaxed in the closing stages of the game, they came under pressure when Ibisevic pulled one back in the 84th minute of the game. The Bosnian substitute made a well timed angled run before forcing an effort past Romero, who was unable to prevent the goal despite getting something on the ball.
Despite Bosnia throwing the kitchen sink at Argentina in the closing minutes of the game, Alejandro Sabella's side managed to hold on and win their first three points of the tournament.
