The worlds football governing body Fifa is in turmoil after a corruption scandal led to the arrest of several senior figures within the organisation. IBTimes UK presents a handy explainer on everything you need to know about the current crisis Fifa is embroiled in.
The story so far
Seven Fifa officials, including vice president Jeffrey Webb, were arrested by Swiss authorities in a dawn raid at a hotel in Zurich on Thursday (27 May). The arrests were made at the request of the US Department of Justice.
They are under investigation by the FBI over corruption involving more than $150m (£98m, €137.3) worth of bribes dating back 24 years. The seven arrested face extradition to the United States, although, if they fight the legal process, this could take years.
A separate criminal investigation into how the 2018 and 2022 World Cups were allocated to Russia and Qatar has also begun.
Uefa, Europes footballing body, now want the Fifa presidential election on 29 May to be postponed, with Uefa chief Michael Platini calling for Fifa president Sepp Blatter to resign.
But Blatter has refused to stand down and has insisted that presidential elections will still go ahead. He is widely expected to beat Prince Ali bin Hussein of Jordan, his only opponent, and win a fifth term as head of the organisation.
