The last rites of veteran actor Farooq Sheikh took place on Monday evening in Andheri, Mumbai. The actor was buried next to his mother Farida's grave at the burial ground in Four Bungalows in Andheri.
His family members and Bollywood celebrities including Javed Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar, Sonali Bendre, Rahul Bose, Shekhar Suman, Divya Dutta, Raza Murad, Anupam Kher, Johnny Lever, Kabir Bedi, Alka Yagnik, Shabana Azmi, Farhan Akhtar, Deepti Naval and Tabu among others bid a farewell to the actor.
Sheikh's body was brought to Mumbai from Dubai on Monday. His body was kept at his residence Highland Park in Lokhandwala Complex for people to pay their last respects . Sheikh was in Dubai along with his family for the year-end holiday, but suffered a heart attack on Saturday morning. He is survived by his wife Rupa Jain and two daughters Shaista and Sanaa.
Actress Sonali Bendre, Deepti Naval and Shabana Azmi broke down in tears at Sheikh's funeral.
"Stars like him are born very rarely and chance to be his co-star is rarer," Naval said, according to The Hindu.
In his film career spanning 40 years, he has worked in more than 40 films and has also acted in television serials.
Sheikh's first film "Garam Hawa" was released in the year 1973. After that he went on to work with notable directors of Indian film industry including Satyajit Ray, Muzaffar Ali and Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
He acted in Ray's "Shatranj Ke Khiladi" released in 1977. He also starred in Noorie released in 1979, Chashme Baddoor, which became a cult classic film, Umrao Jaan with Rekha in 1981 and Kissi Se Na Kehna in 1983.
This year Sheikh worked in two films "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" in which he played the role of Ranbir Kapoor's father and "Club 60" which was released in December.
