Farhan Akhtar Launches 'HeForShe' Campaign; First Man to be Chosen as UN Women's Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia [PHOTOS + VIDEO]

Farhan Akhtar, the versatile actor, director, singer of Bollywood, has become the first man to be appointed as UN Women's Goodwill Ambassador of South Asia. The actor launched the 'organisation's 'HeForShe' campaign on Thursday.

The organisation stated that filmmaker Akhtar has represented "the voice of numerous concerned men on the important issue of gender equality and violence against women and girls in India through his Men Against Rape and Discrimination (MARD) campaign."

The "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag" actor promised to take responsibility to spread awareness about women empowerment.

"We are pleased and honoured to have Farhan as our Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia, for we believe his work and values represent the core values of UN Women," UN Women Executive Director and Under-Secretary-General Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said, while introducing Akhtar.

She further added, "I am convinced that Farhan's passion and conviction for the cause will galvanize a multiplier effect and reach the hearts and minds of men and boys in South Asia and beyond."

Later the filmmaker had an interaction with the media. He said that he supported UN Women's 'HeForShe' campaign and asked all men and boys to be catalysts.

He encouraged everyone to work toward gender equality and to take responsibility for stopping crimes against women.

"I am honoured to serve UN Women as the Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia," said Akhtar.

"This gives me and our MARD initiative an added impetus to work together towards a more gender equal India and world."

Akhtar's own campaign 'MARD' aims to encourage  men to be concerned and sensitive about women's safety.
