It has been two months since "The Vampire Diaries" star Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed got engaged after six months of dating, but one term they refuse to use to address each other are the words "fiancé" and "fiancée."
Speaking to E! News at the third annual Nobel Awards in Beverly Hills over the weekend, Reed said that they prefer the term "human"
"We have all kinds of words," Reed said, to which Somerhalder chimed: "We have lots of words."
"We stick with human," the "Twilight" star said. "He's my human."
Not surprisingly, fans are having a field day with the couple's unusual way of addressing their relationship, with many pointing out that something appears to be off about them. For instance, one E!News reader wrote on the website that calling someone "my human" sounds similar to people saying "my pet."
"Their word for each other is human? Yeah, that's not strange at all," yet another reader noted.
Meanwhile, many have expressed concern on the short span of time they have dated each other, and added that Reed should take some time off to herself before rushing to tie the knot a second time. Reed was previously married to Paul McDonald, a season 10 American Idol contestant, and they separated about three years later.
Somerhalder was involved with his "The Vampire Diaries" co-star Nina Dobrev for about three years before they too called it quits in 2013.
Despite all the criticism the couple has been facing since they started dating, Somerhalder has always defended his relationship with Reed, saying he was happy to be with someone who is as compassionate as Reed.
A few months back he called out haters though an Instagram post, which read: "You HATE NIKKI REED? Really? Do you know her? Hmmmm, I'm not sure that you do. Look on her Instagram feed or twitter and all you will see is a compassionate and beautiful human being. Please put your negative energy elsewhere. You don't even know the person you're talking about."
Somerhalder added that if his fans cared for him, then they should be happy for him "If you hate Nikki then you must hate me…That's sad. Have an amazing day!" he concluded.
