The long-awaited start of Euro 2016 was ushered in by an opening ceremony that featured dancing girls and a performance of the tournaments anthem, This Ones For You, by David Guetta and Zara Larsson.
The French DJ and the 18-year-old Swede performed the centre piece of a brief but colourful ceremony, which also saw the French air force fly over the Stade de France, where the first match between the hosts and Romania was being staged.
The stadium itself was a sea of colour well before kick-off, as fans from both teams packed into the arena, which was the scene of Frances greatest footballing triumph - the World Cup in 1998.
But despite the enthusiasm for the tournament, the opening ceremony prompted a mixed reaction from fans on Twitter, some of whom were distinctly unimpressed by what they saw.
