After a lot of big names were bandied around, Daniel Levy and owner Joe Lewis eventually decided to promote from within, giving Tim Sherwood, who was acting as caretaker manager, the permanent job, with a contract up to the end of the 2014-15 season.
The likes of Guus Hiddink, Murat Yakin, Frank De Boer, Luis Van Gaal and Fabio Capello were just some of the names linked with the Tottenham job after Levy decided to end Andre Villas-Boas' turbulent reign following the 5-0 thrashing handed out by Liverpool a little over a week ago.
Sherwood, the head of football development at the time, was given the interim job, and after convincing Levy enough, following a 2-1 loss to West Ham in the Capital One Cup and a 3-2 win at Southampton in the English Premier League, the Spurs chief executive decided to give the former Spurs midfielder a crack at getting the best out of an expensively-assembled squad.
"Following the departure of Andre Villas-Boas, the club can announce that Tim Sherwood has been appointed head coach with a contract to the end of the 2014/15 season," the club said in a statement.
Sherwood, who has made more than 100 appearances in a Spurs shirt, will be assisted by Chris Ramsey and a couple of former Tottenham players in Les Ferdinand and Steffen Freund, who was also part of Villas-Boas' setup, but suffered a break down in relationship with the Portuguese earlier this season.
"We were extremely reluctant to make a change mid-season, but felt we had to do so in the club's best interests," Levy told the club's official website.
"We have a great squad and we owe them a head coach who will bring out the best in them and allow them to flourish and enjoy a strong, exciting finish to the season.
"We are in the fortunate position of having within our club a talented coach in Tim Sherwood.
"We believe Tim has both the knowledge and the drive to take the squad forward."
After Tottenham spent over £100 million in the summer in new recruits, Sherwood will now be under pressure to ensure Spurs finish in the top four at the end of the season.
