Ben Duckett will be wondering how it all went wrong, after the left-hander lost his place in the limited-overs England side as well, making way for Eoin Morgan, the captain, and Alex Hales, the opener, for the series against India next year. Duckett had a nightmare two Test matches against India, with his batting technique letting him down against R Ashwin.
After being dropped for the third Test, which England lost in Mohali, the talented, attacking left-hander, who made an impression on debut in Bangladesh, lost his place, owing to the fact that Hales was brought back in.
Hales and Morgan had decided against touring Bangladesh, citing security fears, but having been given assurance by the selectors that the decision would not be held against them, they have returned to the team.
There was never really any doubt over Morgan's inclusion, considering how well he has captained the England limited-overs squads, turning them from a side that were embarrassed in the 2015 World Cup into one of the better squads in the world.
Hales is one of the most dangerous batsmen at the top of the order, and India will be wary of his opening partnership with Jason Roy in the six matches that will be played.
The selectors have decided against resting some of the Test stalwarts, with the likes of Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali and Ben Stokes also making it to both the squads. Chris Woakes is only in the ODI team, while Jos Buttler, after forcing his way back into the Test side, will hope to continue his dominance in white ball cricket.
England will play three ODIs and three T20s against India, starting in the second week of January.
