An elderly woman was killed early on Monday in a stampede at a Vijayawada post office where she had come to register for pension.
The post office was crowded as several people, all above 60 years of age, had arrived at the post office to register themselves for the improvised pension plan.
The woman, in her sixties, was killed while trying to rush inside the post office as soon as it opened at 8 in the morning, police said, according to an NDTV report.
The elderly people in Andhra Pradesh's Vijayawada district had gathered to register themselves for the enhanced pension plan, the amount for which has been raised from ₹200 to ₹1,000 after the 2014 general elections.
Several retired citizens had come to register themselves once again as their names were removed from the pension plan earlier for failing to fulfil the criteria. However, this time around, they wanted to ensure they are benefited from the plan.
