Atletico de Kolkata made history on Sunday by lifting two Indian Super League titles in three years. A commendable achievement definitely, and fans of both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan have saluted the ISL franchisee co-owned by Sourav Ganguly for their feat. But saying that ATK has more fanbase than the legendary football clubs from Kolkata is debatable!
Sanjiv Goenka, co-owner of the ISL side, made a controversial comment on Monday as Jose Molina's army touched down at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose international airport, following their win in the ISL final over Kerala Blasters. As expected, he got instantly trolled!
"Have you ever seen this much frenzy for any other team in Kolkata? We are now much more popular than any other club in Kolkata," Goenka said during an event at Quest Mall in Kolkata.
Soon, social media erupted with the ATK co-owner coming under fire for his comment.
"Is he mad??? Or wat?? he needs psychiatric evaluation asap...[sic]," tweeted Aninthony Bass, a Mohun Bagan fan. In reply, Saptarshi Basu, another Mohun Bagan fan, said: "Even the psychiatrist would require counseling if he has a patient like Sanjiv Goenka [sic]".
East Bengal fan Soumen Majumder hit right there where it hurts! "Sanjeev Goenka, how long have u been in Kolkata? guess U have Sourav Ganguly to share his knowledge about Kolkata Football before 2013. If you don't know a certain culture...study it before making illiterate comments on it bcoz being wrong is not a crime; knowing what's right and deliberately saying the wrong thing is! [sic]" he wrote on Twitter.
Check out the action going on in social media
Just to remind Sanjeev Goenka,it is called victory celebration ! pic.twitter.com/570fmtHRWz
