A dowry harassment case has been registered against actress Rambha, her brother and her parents at the Banjara Hills police station in Hyderabad.
Rambha's sister-in-law Pallavi file a petition in court alleging that her husband Srinivasa Rao and his family members have been harassing her to give additional dowry. She sought the court to direct the police in booking a case against Rambha, her brother and her parents Venkateshwar Rao and Usha Rani.
Pallavi tied the knot with Srinivas in 1999 and the couple has two children. The couple settled in Chennai, but unable to face dowry harassment Pallavi moved to her parents' house in Hyderabad six months ago.
"Pallavi alleged that Srinivas became addicted to liquor after incurring losses in business a couple of years ago. She said that he became close to another woman and, with the instigation of his parents and sister, started harassing her for additional dowry to invest in business. Pallavi also alleged that Srinivas had mortgaged all her gold jewellery," Banjara Hills inspector P Murali Krishna told the Times of India.
Pallavi reportedly filed a complaint against her husband in February. Following court's order, the police have registered a case under IPC section 498-A (subjecting a married woman to cruelty) and sections 3 & 5 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, reported TOI.
"It's a court referred matter. Following the court directions, a dowry harassment case been registered. Rambha has been named as an accused in the case. We are examining witnesses. Further investigations are on," Deputy Commissioner of Police V Satyanarayana told Press Trust of India.
Rambha began her film career in the 90s and has starred in several films in various languages including Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada and Bhojpuri.
The actress tied the knot in 2010 with Canada-based NRI Indran Padmanathan. It seems she has been living with her husband and her daughter in Canada for the last few years.
