New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has sought $35 million from the federal government to cover costs for providing security to President-elect Donald Trump, whose house and hotel Trump Tower is located in lower Manhattan.
The mayor, a Republican, said that he requested the money by writing a letter to President Barack Obama. He called the situation "unusual".
Trump's security involves a New York Police Department detail at the president-elect's skyscraper on Fifth Avenue.
The $35 million sought by New York City is only for the period of November 8 and January 20, which is when Trump is supposed to assume office.
De Blasio said that he called Treasury Secretary nominee Steven Mnuchin (mih-NOO'-chihn). He said that he wil also be calling and meeting members of the Obama administration and Congress.
De Blasio had earlier said that it takes $1 million every day to provide security to Trump's home in New York City.
"We are going to be continuing very aggressively in the course of the next few days, calls and meetings with members of the Obama administration and members of the Congress to nail down the reimbursements for the time between November 8 and January 20," said de Blasio. "That will of course be the responsibility of the current administration."
Trump has spent many hours in his New York City home ever since his nomination, forcing the NYPD to work with the US Secret Service, who are responsible for the president-elect and president's safety.
