In what seems to be a real-life enactment of the Bollywood film Dolly Ki Doli, wherein the lead actress plays a bride who cons men into marrying her and then robs them of their wealth, a woman named Megha Bhargav from Indore allegedly did the same with 11 rich men before she was finally arrested by the police from Noida on Saturday.
The police sprung into action after Kochi resident Loren Justin filed a complaint against his "wife" Megha in October who had allegedly fled with jewellery worth Rs 15 lakh sometime after the wedding. The police tracked the location of the woman and reached Noida last week before finally arresting her on Saturday.
A team of police officers from Kerala arrested Bhargav, her sister Prachi and her brother-in-law Devendra Sharma from Amrapali Zodiac Society in Sector 120 with the help of the Noida Police, the Times of India reported. Later, the police in Kerala found out that Justin was the fourth man from the state Bhargav had conned. She had married three other men previously and conned them in the same manner. But it was only Justin who had filed a complaint with the police.
According to investigators, Bhargav would look for rich men but only those who were disadvantaged when it came to marriage — divorcees, those with physical disabilities, or dark-complexioned aspirants who couldn't find partners — and win their love and trust. She would stay with them for a while after marriage and then flee with all the valuables but not before spiking their beverage with some sedative.
"Since the bride was good looking, several men easily fell into her trap," Inspector Sunil of Kerala Police told TOI.
An associate named Mahendra would help Bhargav identify the men. Mahendra is still absconding after Saturday's raid in Noida.
Bhargav, 28, confessed that she had married four men, including Justin, but denied that she had conned them. Instead, she said that she opted out of the marriage after the relationship with her "husbands" deteriorated. She has been taken to Kochi on a transit remand and where she will be interrogated and charges will be filed.
