Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange has made decent collection at the Indian box office in the first week and become the fifth highest grossing Hollywood film in the India market in 2016.
Doctor Strange is an American superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character. Since Marvel Comics character has huge fanbase in India, this movie had huge amount of hype surrounding it before its release. As there were no big ticket releases, the movie was to expected to fare well in this market.
Released in decent number of screens on November 4, Benedict Cumberbatch opened to good response and collected Rs 2.63 crore in the country on the first day. The word of mouth boosted its collection with the film showing decent growth on Saturday and Sunday. Doctor Strange collected approximately Rs 10 crore nett at the Indian box office in its opening weekend.
The Scott Derrickson-directed superhero film witnessed drop on Monday. When compared to its opening collection, Doctor Strange showed over 35 percent on its fourth day. Its business continued to drop on the following days. The Hollywood movie movie collected Rs 5.13 crore nett at the Indian box office on the weekdays.
Doctor Strange collected Rs 15.23 crore nett at the Indian box office in the first week. Its India gross total surpassed Rs 20 crore mark in seven days. Taran Adarsh tweeted: "#DoctorStrange Fri 2.63 cr, Sat 3.46 cr, Sun 4.01 cr, Mon 1.67 cr, Tue 1.50 cr, Wed 1.06 cr, Thu 90 lacs. Total: ₹ 15.23 cr. India biz."
The Jungle Book, Captain America: Civil War, The Conjuring and X-Men: Apocalypse, which were released earlier this year, are some of the highest grossing Hollywood movies in the Indian market.
