Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that the Muslim community should look for a solution to the triple talaq issue instead of politicising the matter. He added that he would continue his fight against the suffering of the country's Muslim daughters and that the Centre would look for a solution to the triple talaq issue.
Modi, while speaking at the Basava Convention in New Delhi, said: "Main Muslim samaaj se aagrah karunga ki triple talaq ke mudde ko rajneeti ke daayre mein mat aane dijiye. Aap log aake aakar iska samaadhan kijiye (I request Muslim society not to politicise the triple talaq issue. Rather, come forward and solve the matter)... Triple talaq issue should not be seen through a political prism."
The prime minister expressed confidence that reformers would emerge from within the Muslim community and put an end to the pain suffered by Muslim women due to the practice of triple talaq.
"I am sure that reformers from the Muslim community will come forward and put an end to triple talaq," Modi said while speaking on the occasion of Basava Jayanti at Vigyan Bhawan in the national capital.
Modi also unveiled the holy Vachanas of Basavanna, which were written by 12th-century social reformer Basavanna and other saints in 23 Indian languages. He also addressed an event to mark the inauguration of Basava Jayanthi 2017 — April 29 is Basavanna's birth anniversary — and Golden Jubilee Celebration of Basava Samithi at the Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.
