Varun Dhawan, John Abraham and Jacqueline Fernandez-starrer "Dishoom" had a fantastic opening at the box office. The action-adventure drama recorded the sixth highest opening day box office collection of 2016.
"Dishoom" shattered the first day business record of Shahid Kapoor-Alia Bhatt starrer "Udta Punjab" to become the sixth highest opener of 2016. "Udta Punjab" earned Rs. 10.05 crore, while "Dishoom" earned Rs. 11.05 crore.
"Eros & NGE's #Dishoom opened to fantastic reviews & collected an excellent ₹11.05 CR NBOC India on day," Eros Now tweeted.
The film, directed by Rohit Dhawan, had a good pre-release hype due to high promotion. The hype remained the same after the film opened to positive reviews. Good hype and positive critics' reviews helped the film to record a good opening day occupancy.
"'Dishoom' has been tracking well since its first promo has been out and obviously there is a lot of curiosity for the film. I reckon the film is going to open on good figures like that can easily transcend the movie to have a big weekend as well," trade analyst Amul Mohan said in a statement.
The buddy-cop film is now among the top 10 openers of 2016 list. The film follows Tiger Shroff and Shraddha Kapoor-starrer "Baaghi" that earned Rs. 11.94 crore. Also, "Dishoom" entry in the top 10 list has pushed Sidharth Malhotra and Fawad Khan starrer "Kapoor and Sons" out of the list.
Meanwhile, the film opened on a phenomenal note at the UAE-GCC box office as well. In just two days, the film minted Rs. 3.63 crore from the Gulf region. "#Dishoom takes UAE-GCC by storm... Thu AED 900k, Fri AED 1.1 million. Total: AED 2 million [₹ 3.63 cr]. EXCELLENT!" trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted.
Directed by Rohit and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, "Dishoom" features John, Varun and Jacqueline in the lead roles. Akshaye Khanna returns to the big screen with "Dishoom" and plays a negative character in the film. The film also features Akshay Kumar, Parineeti Chopra, Nargis Fakhri and Saqib Saleem in cameos.
