In Chennai, "Dharmadurai" raked in Rs. 1.09 crore from 243 shows. It ran to packed houses on Saturday and Sunday due to good word-of-mouth, say trade experts. The Tamil film also made decent collections in the U.S. and Malaysia.
In the U.S., "Dharmadurai" collected Rs. 17.52 lakh ($26,066) from 38 screens. But it failed to beat the collections of Vijay Sethupathi's previous film "Iruvi," which had minted Rs. 62.87 lakh ($93,765) in its opening weekend.
"Dharmadurai" raked in Rs. 42.51 lakh (MYR 254,420) in its three-day first weekend in Malaysia. The film enjoyed good viewership and is expected to continue its good run here.
In Australia, "Dharmadurai" collected Rs. 12.32 lakh ($24,140) from 10 screens and earned less than Rs 1 lakh (NZ$1,899) in New Zealand. Overall, the movie has raked in Rs. 1.06 crore at the overseas box office.
"Dharmadurai" is written and directed by Seenu Ramaswamy. Tamannaah Bhatia, Aishwarya Rajesh and Srushti Dange have played female leads in the flick, which has Yuvan Shankar Raja's music, M Sukumar's cinematography and Kasi Vishwanathan's editing.
The movie has opened to fairly positive reviews. Hence, it is expected to do well at the box office in the coming days.
