United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has suggested that he could run for South Korean presidency after former South Korean President Park Geun-hye's impeachment over a corruption scandal.
Ban will leave the top position at the UN at the end of December. The UN chief, during his last press conference, said that after relinquishing the UN seat, he will take some rest and head back to South Korea and will consider how he can best help his country, according to BBC.
The next presidential election in South Korea is scheduled to be held next year in December. However, after Park's impeachment, an election could be due in months for the next leader of the country.
Over the months, thousands of people in South Korea have protested against Park's presidency and asked the South Korean president to resign after corruption allegations and investigations against her. The authorities in the nation are investigating Park allowing one of her close friends to influence political decisions for her own personal gain.
Reports state that if South Korea's constitutional court upholds the impeachment vote against Park, then she will be the first South Korean President to be deposed in the nation's democratic era. After the acceptance of her impeachment by the constitutional court, another presidential election will be held reportedly within 60 days. The court has a total of 180 days to come to a decision about Park's fate.
There have been massive protests against Park recently with thousands taking to the streets demanding her ouster. A similar protest is scheduled to be held during the weekend where large crowds are expected to gather to urge the constitutional court to remove the impeached South Korean president formally. This protest will mark the eighth consecutive one against the South Korean leader in a row.
