A two-and-a-half-year-old girl was abducted on Friday night when she was at a Ramlila event in the neighbourhood with her grandmother and raped. The police are not yet sure whether the minor was raped by one of the two accused or both.
The victim was abducted when the power went off in the locality around 11.30 pm. Hours later, she was spotted at a park and was bleeding profusely. She was rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where the doctors confirmed that she was raped.
"The two-and-a-half-year-old girl was brought (to the hospital) at 2.30 AM and she was bleeding from her private parts. She was attended to by our doctors. She is now stable and conscious and her bleeding has been brought under control," Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital medical superintendent Avneendra Prasad said, according to PTI.
The Delhi police have registered a case under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code and POCSO Act.
Another incident of gangrape of a five-year-old girl was also reported on the same night from east Delhi's Anand Vihar area.
Both the incidents led to strong criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung as Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal slammed the Delhi police for failing to provide safety to women in the national capital, which witnessed the horrific Nirbhaya gangrape-and-murder case in December 2012.
The Delhi police come under the Union home ministry even as the AAP government has been demanding its control citing poor law and order situation in the national capital.
"Repeated rape of minors is shameful and worrying. Delhi police has completely failed to provide safety. What are PM n his LG doing," Kejriwal asked through a tweet on Saturday.
Kejriwal asked Modi to hand over the charge of Delhi police to the AAP government.
"PM Modi shud either himslf act or give control over Delhi police n public order to elected govt of delhi या खà¥à¤¦ करो या दूसरों को करने दो. PM sir, give control of delhi police to del govt for one year. If situation does not improve, take it back," he said in a series of tweets.
