A case has been filed against self-proclaimed godman Asaram Bapu in a local court in Bihar after he blamed the 23-year-old Delhi gang-rape victim for the horrifying crime that took place in December.
Advocate Sudhir Kumar Ojha filed the complaint in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) S P Singh against the spiritual leader, who said that the crime would not have taken place if the girl had addressed the accused as brothers. Ojha has filed the case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
While speaking to his followers at a public event, Asaram Bapu had said, "The victim daughter is as guilty as her rapists... She should have called the culprits brothers and begged before them to stop."
"The accused were drunk. If the girl had chanted hymns to Goddess Saraswati and to Guru Diksha then she wouldn't have entered the bus," he added.
The applicant in his complaint alleged that Bapu's statement has hurt the sentiments of people. He also charged Bapu for insulting women.
Ojha has sought the court to give harsh punishment to Bapu for his 'condemnable statements' against the victim, PTI reported.
Bapu's statement came at the time when the entire nation is protesting against the brutal gang-rape incident and demanding strict punishment for the accused.
The spiritual leader later apologised for his remark. "How can I blame the girl for the rape? I am not that cruel. If I have done something wrong, I will apologise a thousand times," Bapu told News Channel Times Now.
