After massive campaigning by major political parties, Delhi registered not just the highest voter turnout of 65.13 percent during the 4 December assembly elections, but also hundreds of violations of the Model Code of Conduct.
More than 77.7 lakh people out of 1.19 crore eligible voters exercised their voting rights on Wednesday. The polls also saw 4.05 lakh first-time voters, Election Commission in Delhi told PTI. The highest turnout, among the nine districts, was recorded in North-East Delhi with over 68 percent.
The highest voting turnout among the 70 constituencies was observed in Seemapuri with 72.19 percent and the lowest turnout was recorded in Ballimaran at 56.20 percent.
In a first for the Delhi assembly polls, voting at a few constituencies was allowed four-and-a-half hours past the 5pm deadline. After 3pm, many had to stand in long queues for more than an hour to cast their vote. The last vote was cast at a booth in Okhla Assembly segment.
Law and Order
According to data collected by Chief Election Commissioner Vijay Dev from 4 October till 2 December, 346 First Information Reports (FIRs) were registered against various political parties for violating Model Code of Conduct.
As many as 105 cases were filed against the one-year-old Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), 88 FIRs against Congress and 86 cases against BJP.
Cash worth ₹1.64 crore, allegedly meant to buy out voters, was recovered from various constituencies, PTI reported. A total of 42,000 litres of alcohol worth more than ₹1 crore was seized by the EC. A few days ago, the AAP had released a sting operation video, accusing rival parties of distributing stocks of alcohol to lure voters.
