Three medical students were killed in a horrific accident on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway on Wednesday night. The car they were traveling in collided with a truck parked on the roadside which was loaded with iron rods.

The student who was driving the car has been identified as Kumara Raja, aged 25. He survived with major injuries and is under treatment at a nearby hospital. The deceased students have been identified as Vishal Choudary, Prajwal Kumar, and Bhushan. They are all in their 20's and second-year MBBS students at Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS).

Police said that the accident took place on the National Highway Sanna Amanikere railway gate near Devanahalli at around 2 am. The students were traveling to Venkatagiri Kote near Chikkaballapu to visit Kumara Raja's hometown.

The incident took place when Raja, who was driving the car, didn't notice the truck parked on the roadside and lost his balance. The truck was loaded with iron rods which pierced through the victim's body. The impact of the crash was so bad that the front and top portion of the car was completely mangled. The truck driver and his assistant fled the spot soon after.

"The police have registered a case of negligence under Section 337 and 338 of IPC against the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) as there were no street lights. "If the lights were functioning, the tragedy could have been averted," said a senior police officer.
