The wife of late Maharashtra ATS DCP Sanjay Banerjee claimed that her husband "accidentally" shot himself.
Banerjee's widow Sushmita told police that he tried to take out a handkerchief from his pocket during a family meal at Goa Portuguesa Hotel, Thane, when his pistol fell and was set off. The incident happened around 4 pm on Saturday.
Thane Police Commissioner KP Raghuvanshi confirming her statement saying, "She has said that Banerjee had pulled put his personal pistol and was fidgeting with it when it accidentally went off."
"The probe is on. We are still probing and have not come to a conclusion yet."
Sushmita claimed that her husband wanted to take the family out for lunch as their son came home from boarding school in Panchgani.
Authorities had believed that Banerjee shot himself while he was seated at a table, but his wife's claim has thrown the investigators off-track.
Police had suspected that late DCP might have killed himself over unpaid salary. He was reportedly not paid for eight months but his colleagues claimed that he did not have any financial problem.
According to The Times of India, an officer said he did not believe the claims made by Banerjee's widow over his death. He said that the DCP was well aware about weapons and could not have committed such a mistake.
