To say that Nissan's low-cost brand Datsun is placing its redi-GO against Maruti Suzuki Alto in the small car segment in India will be stating the obvious. However, Datsun seems to have taken the competition on its head and the result can be discerned looking at the latest advertisements doing the rounds at the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy in England. In the ad, the Japanese carmaker takes a jibe at the Alto, which has been India's 'favourite car' for quite a long time now.
In the commercial of Datsun, it is not hard to see the Alto being targeted, with the reference to "Purana (old)". The ad prods young buyers to go for the new redi-Go. It features Indian actor Vinay Pathak of the Khosla ka Ghosla fame, claiming that Datsun redi-Go offers high ground clearance, new design and more power.
Datsun redi-GO has been in the market since June 7 2016 and the hatchback has been clocking average sales figures of 2,000 units per month. On the other hand, the Alto, which has been the best selling model in the small car segment for over a decade, has a staggering average sales figures of 20,000 units a month.
Currently, redi-GO is offered in the country with a 799cc three-cylinder petrol motor that churns out 53bhp and peak torque of 72Nm that is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. The small car also claims to return a fuel efficiency of 25.17kmpl. Datsun is reportedly readying a 1.0-litre engine version of the redi-Go for the Indian market, which is expected to go on sale by July 2017. The 1.0 litre version of the hatchback is likely to feature an engine similar to that of Renault's Kwid. The redi-GO variants are currently retailed between Rs 2.38 lakh and Rs 3.54 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
