British actor Daniel Craig called for more funding for UNMAS, the UN agency that efforts to rid the world of bombs and mines, on 4 April, the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.
In 2015, Craig was appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon as the Global Advocate for the Elimination of Mines and Explosive Hazards. The actor, who is best known for his role as British agent 007 in the James Bond franchise, met with the UN Chief at the New York headquarters. He also met with journalists and made a plea to the public.
I am in awe of the people I work with at UNMAS. The energy and the courage of the men and women in this organization is astounding. So Im asking you to join me to promote their work fund their programs so that you too can make a difference. Your support in whatever form it takes will allow these incredible people to literally make the world a safer place, Craig said.
According to its 2015 annual report, UNMAS destroyed 168,000 explosives and assisted 22,000 victims in 2015.
