After shattering many Indian box office records, Aamir Khan's Dangal opened to a huge response in China. The Indian film scored big at the Chinese box office on its opening day.
Released in a record 9,000 screens on Friday, May 5, the movie broke the record of Aamir's previous film PK in terms of the number of screens. PK was released in 4,000 theatres.
Dangal made Rs 13.19 crore at the Chinese box office on its opening day, which is a massive figure for an Indian film at an overseas market. "#Dangal opens in China to an OVERWHELMING response... Opens at No 2 at China BO... Fri $ 2.05 million [₹ 13.19 cr]," trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted.
Dangal China release: Country's biggest cinema operator snubs Aamir movie; fans disappointed
PK had grossed Rs 100 crore in China — the highest amount made by an Indian film in any overseas market. Given that Dangal has a wider screen count, it is believed that the Nitesh Tiwari-directed movie will be able to cross the Rs 100 crore mark in the China market and break PK's record.
Although the feat looks achievable, Aamir's movie will face an obstacle since Wanda cinemas – China's biggest cinema operator – showed some reluctance in screening the film in most of its theatres. The operator has more than 1,657 screens, but only 37 screens have been allotted to Dangal.
In Beijing, the sports drama got only three shows on the opening day in Wanda's theatres. Cine-goers are baffled about the reason behind Wanda's apparent 'boycott' of Dangal and have been expressing their anger on social media.
Dangal has been released as Shuai Jiao Baba — meaning Let's Wrestle, Dad in English — in China. Last month, Aamir promoted the film in the country along with director Nitesh.
