Dangal actress Zaira Wasim, who played the role of young Geeta Phogat in the movie, met with an accident at Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, June 9. The actress escaped unhurt.
The incident happened when the 16-year-old actress, who hails from Srinagar, was travelling with her friends in a car and the driver lost control on Boulevard Road. The car fell into the Dal Lake.
Zaira and her friends were rescued by locals who rushed to the spot. While the actress escaped unhurt, her friends have sustained injuries. "Locals immediately rescued her and her companion. She escaped unhurt, but her companion sustained injuries in the accident," a local person told the Times of India.
Earlier this year, Zaira made headlines when she posted an open letter on her social media pages, apologising for hurting the sentiments of fellow Kashmiris through her work. She took the step after facing massive criticism for meeting Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who praised her for her performance in Dangal, and described her as a "role model".
Although the meeting was cordial, Zaira faced criticism for meeting the CM. The actress was trolled on Twitter, which eventually forced her to release the apology letter. Later, she even received death threats after a protest broke out against her at Srinagar. Several Bollywood celebrities including her on-screen father Aamir came forward in support of her.
