Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew was left fuming over the decision to award the Reds a penalty in the dying seconds of injury time, which allowed Christian Benteke to give Liverpool a hotly-disputed win at Selhurst Park. Benteke had tumbled under minimal contact from Damien Delayney, and referee Andre Marriner subsequently awarded a penalty after an intervention from assistant referee Scott Ledger.
I think everyone has seen the penalty. If youre the referee and you see the centre-half pulling out of the challenge then you dont give the penalty, Pardew said at the post-match press conference. The linesman assumed the little touch was a penalty, he [Benteke] makes the most of it and gives a penalty – its tough to take, that is.
If you think that touch affects the fall that he has, then you seriously need to be consulted. Im a football person and that touch doesnt warrant the dive that he makes. Its the dive that makes the linesmans mind up. Its an issue thats worrying in the game.
Pardew also took a swipe at former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher for announcing it was the right decision live on TV at the time.
I heard Jamie Carragher say if anyones going to touch you, you can make the most of it. Jamie Carragher saying that? Hes an ex-pro, come on.
