Barbados Tridents notched up their third victory of CPL 2016 as they defeated St Lucia Zouks by 25 runs on Sunday. With this win, they have now climbed up to the third spot in the CPL 2016 points table.
Zouks, on the other hand, succumbed to their third defeat of the season in four matches. As a result, they remained at the bottom of the CPL 2016 points table.
Darren Sammy misread the pitch and the conditions yet again. This is probably the nth time that the captain has done so in this tournament. Sammy won the toss and sent the Tridents to bat first.
However, Kyle Hope (28, 28b, 2x4, 1x6) and Shoaib Malik (15, 22b, 1x4) got off to a slow start but they did not get out early on in the innings. Then it was AB de Villiers (32, 22b, 3x4, 1x6) and Nicholas Pooran, who held the innings together and powered their side to a total of 173 for the loss of five wickets at the end of 20 overs.
Pooran stole the show with his career best innings. He was on fire on Sunday against the St Lucia Zouks. His innings of 81 from 39 balls included nine fours and four sixes. Pooran was striking at over 200.
Zouks had to bat well to get to that target. At least someone had to play a big innings and anchor the run chase. But none of the Zouks batsman could hold on to their wickets.
Tridents bowlers — Ravi Rampaul, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Shoaib Malik, Navin Stewart and Raymon Reifer — all got their names on the wickets column. Yet again, it was a cohesive effort from the Tridents that helped them win their third match of CPL 2016 and climb up to the third spot.
