German auto maker Volkswagen has officially confirmed the arrival of its new Beetle in India, not long after reports started doing the rounds that the company has imported the popular hatchback to the country.
The Twitter account of Volkswagen India posted a picture with the tagline 'The Beetle will be back to add a dash of colour to your life...' Although the exact launch date is kept under wraps, we expect it to happen during the course of this week.
Volkswagen Beetle, which was on sale in India, was discontinued owing to the poor demand. Now when the iconic Beetle is getting ready for a re-launch in India, it would be interesting to see how the company will price its new offering.
To be pinned to rival MINI Cooper S, Mercedes A-Class Fiat Abarth Punto, and BMW 1-Series, the new Volkswagen Beetle will be brought to India as Completely Built Unit (CBU).
According to Zauba, which tracks India's import and export details, the imported Beetle comes powered with a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine that also does duty in the Jetta sedan. From what we hear, the new Beetle is likely to churn out a maximum power of 158bhp and peak torque of 250Nm.
The new avatar of the Volkswagen Beetle which has got retro styling is likely to be priced at around Rs 30 lakh (ex-showroom).
